Inside the Top 3 Best Places to Work | Glassdoor for Employers

Glassdoor is pleased to recognize this year's 100 large businesses and 50 small and medium-sized businesses in the U.S. as Best Places to Work.

Businesses on the list are very diverse, but have one thing in common: they approach workplace policies from a people-first perspective - increasingly important given the shifting dynamics between workers and employers in recent years.

Our three top-ranked companies of 2023 - software company Gainsight, computer hardware company Box, and market research firm Bain & Company - share these aspects that set them apart:

  1. Consider culture to be a core company value, and commit to operating as a unified team (vs. a hierarchical structure).
  2. Provide benefits that go above and beyond standard offerings.
  3. Leverage their Glassdoor employer profiles to listen to employees, gauge workplace satisfaction, and drive change in response to that feedback.

#1: Gainsight, rating 4.7

Gainsight is a software company with products that focus on customer experience and product analytics. The California-based company, founded in 2009, was ranked as a Top 100 Cloud Company in 2018 by Forbes and has previously been included on Glassdoor's Best Place to Work list.

Why Gainsight is a Best Place to Work

1. It is walking the talk on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)

Gainsight's Glassdoor reviews indicate it's making great strides in DEI, which matches its company mission of being "human-first" while "winning in business." Reviews suggest Gainsight's work in putting diversity and inclusion at the forefront of its core values is working.

Gainsight's Pulse Impact program is designed to create equitable talent pipelines and access to employment through education and training programs, internships, and industry hiring commitments for underrepresented communities. Its "CS YOU" initiative identifies underrepresented talent and training, internship, and mentorship programs.

2. A "work from anywhere" mentality

While Gainsight has always been a remote-friendly company, it embraced the changing culture of where to work and became an all-remote company in 2020. Gainsight supports this culture by offering tips on working effectively as a remote worker and how to find and maintain work-life balance.

#2: Box, rating 4.6

Founded in 2005, Box is a hardware company that develops and markets cloud-based content management, collaboration, and file-sharing tools for businesses. It has appeared on our Best Places to Work list before (and was on Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work For list in 2019), but ranking #2 is a high score for this company, indicating Box is largely getting it right for its employees.

Why Box is a Best Place to Work

1. "A community that celebrates and supports your whole self."

Box's culture encourages ownership of career growth and opportunities that drive new ideas. With a culture that suggests "Boxers" can bring their "wacky self" to work every day, this playful, innovative, "be yourself" culture is garnering the company high marks on its Glassdoor reviews. For example, "Everyone really wants to see you grow professionally and I feel really valued at Box!"

This supportive culture is bolstered by an impressive commitment to diversity and inclusion. Box's program, detailed on its website, includes equitable hiring efforts, eliminating unconscious bias, and "thriving" at work by emphasizing career growth.

2. Work-life balance

Box's Glassdoor reviews mention work-life balance dozens of times, and the reviews are overwhelmingly positive. Combined with Box's flexible work schedule, this is a winning combination that attracts candidates and retains current employees. Workers value their own time and hours higher than perhaps ever before, and companies that understand those feelings and respond accordingly are reaping the benefits of top talent.

#3: Bain & Company, consulting, rating 4.6

Bain & Company keeps its spot from last year's list at #3. Founded in 1973, this global consulting firm partners with clients from a broad range of industries helping them tackle everything from organizational change to sales and marketing challenges, mergers and acquisitions, and more. Bain & Company is one of the select businesses that have appeared on our Best Places to Work list for all 15 years of its existence.

Why Bain & Company is a Best Place to Work

1. The culture

Bain & Company's Glassdoor reviews emphasize the great people and culture that comprise "Bainies" (as they call themselves). A supportive culture that encourages work-life balance, a sense of community, and collaborative teams make this a place where employees can grow and thrive in their roles. Multiple mentions of "challenging" work have a positive spin, indicating workers who feel invested in their careers, with real growth potential.

2. Competitive salary and benefits

Multiple reviews discuss salary satisfaction and a sense of gratitude for a strong benefits package, including a strong healthcare benefit with little or no cost to the employee, generous parental leave, fertility and adoption assistance, matching 401(k) contributions, and "ample" vacation time, including unlimited sick or personal days. "People take their vacation … and then some," said one reviewer. "Bain really cares about your well-being and it shows," said another.

The characteristics that landed these three businesses at the top of our list show a commitment and investment in listening to employees and responding to their feedback to shape company culture.
