April 1, 2023 Dear Hiring Manager, I'm excited to be writing to you today about the CFO position at Alfred & Able Laboratories. With my organizational skills, meticulous planning, financial awareness and mathematics skills, I know that I am a competent candidate for this role. I greatly admire the work Alfred & Able does for the scientific community, especially regarding new research for medicines and medical technology. I believe that as a member of this laboratory's team, I can help continue to make a difference with Alfred & Able.  Much of my past experience has been with financial management as both an accountant and fund manager. Since my time in college, I've been interested in management and have pursued financial management positions as well as business strategist roles. Throughout my time working through college and in positions after, I've taken incentive-creating roles that help not only manage the revenue of medical facilities but also improve the overall available capital for these businesses. Some skills that I believe I can offer this laboratory include some of the following:
  • Business strategy with a goal of improving overall capital
  • Financial evaluation of capital use, providing efficiency improvement where necessary
  • Staffing and staff training, both for laboratory managers and finance employees

There are many skills that you can include in your CFO cover letter to help improve your chances of securing employment. Some skills that your potential employer may look for in your application include:

Financial knowledge

Financial knowledge is an important chief financial officer's duty, as they manage not only their own department's finances but usually the entire company's. Chief financial officers understand the needs of different departments, taking each of them into account when considering different policies and financial plan adjustments. They may reduce funding in one area of a company to improve capital in another or mitigate the costs of multiple departments to prepare for financial improvement. CFOs help manage the payroll for an entire company. They typically do this on a general scale, administering check and payment responsibilities to accounting staff. When overseeing payroll, CFOs usually check to ensure that all employees receive appropriate payments each quarter. They handle any salary adjustments that benefit the company or improve general employee satisfaction. Showcasing your payroll management skills in your cover letter can show your potential employer that you not only understand guidelines for departments but also have the authority to correct them if needed.

Compliance management

Compliance management, like auditing, is an important responsibility for a chief financial officer. As the leader in financial changes and improvements, CFO employees help create and ensure compliance with all new policies within a company.
