Adam Grant, Glassdoor's chief worklife expert, recently sat down with CNBC to highlight "boreout" — an underrecognized workplace issue that's becoming more common for workers in remote and hybrid work environments. Unlike burnout, which happens when you're overwhelmed and overstimulated, boreout occurs when you're underwhelmed — feeling disinterested and unfulfilled due to monotonous tasks, limited growth opportunities, unclear purpose, and especially a lack of social interaction.
Grant’s practical solutions can help organizations and employees combat this growing problem. For managers, he suggests focusing on improving employee morale by relaxing virtual meeting requirements, like making cameras optional to help employees recharge. On the other hand, he says workers should intentionally focus on building workplace connections by setting up coffee chats or collaborating on shared problems, as these social bonds are what make work truly engaging in our increasingly digital workplace.
