What is the S&P 500?

The S&P 500 is a a stock market index that tracks the performance of around 500 of the largest U.S. companies. The S&P 500 is not an investment itself: It's essentially a list. But you can buy stock in the companies listed on the S&P 500. Alternatively, you can buy an index fund that includes all of the stocks in the S&P 500.

Notable entries into the S&P 500 in 2025 included Ares Management, AppLovin, Robinhood, Emcor Group, DoorDash, TKO Group Holdings, Williams-Sonoma, and Expand Energy, which replaced Kellanova, MarketAxess Holdings, Caesars Entertainment, Enphase Energ, Borgwarner Inc., Teleflex Inc., Celanese Corp. and FMC Corp

Companies must fulfill several criteria to become or stay a member of the S&P 500, including:

The S&P is a float-adjusted market capitalization-weighted index. This just means the company's size and the number of shares affect how much weight it has in the index.

The S&P 500 is updated and rebalanced quarterly in March, June, September and December.
